Google and Pentagon Agree on Deal for 'Any Lawful' Use of AI

Google has reportedly signed a classified agreement with the US Department of Defense, granting the Pentagon permission to utilize its artificial intelligence (AI) models for "any lawful government purpose", according to a report by The Information.

The deal, which was reached under undisclosed terms, has sparked controversy among Google employees, who have expressed concerns that the company's AI technology could be used in "inhumane or extremely harmful ways".

In a recent letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, a group of Google employees urged the company to block the Pentagon from using its AI, citing ethical concerns and the potential for misuse.

However, if the agreement is confirmed, Google would join the likes of OpenAI and xAI, which have also entered into classified AI deals with the US government.

Anthropic, another AI company, was previously involved in discussions with the Pentagon but was blacklisted after refusing to comply with the Department of Defense's demands to remove certain features from its AI system.

The development highlights the growing trend of tech companies partnering with government agencies to develop and utilize AI technology, raising important questions about the ethics and accountability of such collaborations.
