Airbnb announced plans to launch an AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, according to TechCrunch and The Verge. The company detailed its new AI feature in its Q3 2026 shareholder letter and during an earnings call on Thursday.
Airbnb aims to distinguish its AI agent from conventional chatbots, stating that typical AI agents are suited for simple tasks like restaurant reservations or scheduling, but not for trip planning. CEO Brian Chesky told analysts on the earnings call that travel is aspirational and that discovering destinations is part of the experience, with TechCrunch reporting 80% of travelers enjoy researching trips. The Verge noted Airbnb believes its experience in matching hosts and guests, combined with its role in existing reservations, provides an advantage.
The agent will feature a custom-designed, AI-native experience, developing an interface around a user's question rather than just text-heavy chat responses, TechCrunch reported. Chesky described it as feeling like generative UI, designed to offer the appropriate interface at the right time. The system will draw from hundreds of travel-specific components, including maps, photos, comparisons, calendars, and itineraries, composing them in real-time, according to TechCrunch. The company’s nearly 20 years of experience in connecting hosts and guests informs the agent's development, incorporating insights into booking and hosting on its platform.
The agent is expected to assist guests throughout their trip, handling tasks like changing reservations, resolving payment issues, processing refunds, rebooking, and providing 24-hour safety support, TechCrunch stated. Airbnb also anticipates that the agent will eventually help with other aspects of trips, such as homes, hotels, services, and experiences, areas the company has focused on since a redesign last year.
This announcement follows prior teasers from Airbnb about building an AI travel agent. While the company previously indicated a rollout sometime in the next year, it has now committed specifically to the first half of 2027, as reported by TechCrunch. The news coincided with strong third-quarter earnings, which saw revenue grow 19% to $4.87 billion, exceeding Wall Street estimates. Airbnb also raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens from mid-teens, with TechCrunch highlighting Chesky's comment that Q3 represented the fastest revenue growth in more than three years for the company.
